Samind — a mobile assistant against eating disorders

Project summary

- Problem:

• Existing algorithms are easily bypassed: authors of harmful content replace letters with symbols

(for example, "hunger strike" → "g0l.dovk4", "starving" → "(star)⭐️🪽(wing)")

or they shorten words, disguise appeals as jokes and short posts without context.

A person with a real disorder is left alone with content that reinforces patterns at the level of dopamine loops. Even if we simply close or block a triggering post, the brain still manages to recognize the trigger, activate the amygdala, and trigger an anxiety response.

Our solution

— switch, not prohibit.

The Samind app analyzes text on the screen in the background, recognizes hidden triggers (including hidden spellings), and instead of blocking, displays an unexpected distracting question. The screen is slightly blurred to catch attention before the trigger takes hold. Local AI is trained to distinguish dangerous from safe contexts directly on the device—without sending data to the internet. If anxiety does arise, the chatbot provides support through grounding techniques.

Who we are looking for:
— Enthusiasts willing to contribute their skills to a socially significant product. The project is volunteer-based, but with clear objectives, deadlines, and co-authorship.

1. Android Developer:

- Writing an app from scratch (home screen, chatbot, settings, background screen reader, floating icon). ML model integration.

- Requirements: Kotlin, Android SDK, AccessibilityService, WindowManager, Room, TensorFlow Lite.

2. ML Engineer / Data Scientist (NLP):

- Collecting a corpus of trigger phrases, training a model (DistilBERT) for text classification, converting to TFLite.

- Requirements: Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow, Hugging Face Transformers, NLP classification.

3. UX/UI designer:

- Creation of visual style, application screens, prototypes, animations and mascots.

- Requirements: Figma, understanding of mobile patterns.

4. Psychologist/consultant:

- Dialogue security checks, consultations on wording, validation of effectiveness.

- Requirements: clinical psychology, experience with eating disorders or anxiety disorders, understanding of CBT.

5. Tester / QA :

- Testing the application on different devices, searching for bugs (especially in AccessibilityService and overlay windows), testing scenarios.

- Requirements: manual testing of mobile applications, ability to write bug reports.

6. Content Researcher and Marketer:

- Monitoring social media for new trigger phrases, analyzing trends, collecting feedback, assisting with volunteer recruitment and promotion.

- Requirements: experience in SMM/marketing, ability to analyze content.

7. Copywriter:

- Writing 100+ distraction questions, grounding technique texts, onboarding, and notifications.

- Requirements: literate Russian.
